First Master Control at KPCS
Original Master Control—KPCS went on the air for the first time in 1957 from the basement of Pasadena City College’s Horace Mann Building. This General Electric audio console filled with vacuum tubes helped to heat the room. Note the double-plug patch cords hanging on the steam pipe, and the World War II military headphones. Gary Smith is at the controls. The young lady is holding a sixteen-inch transcription disc. The microphone is an RCA 74-B “Junior Velocity” ribbon model. Photo by Margaret Stovall.
